After the War of 1812 and a trade embargo between the United States and England came to a conclusion, the US supply of copper planchets had been exhausted. When the embargo was lifted and new planchets were imported to the US from England, the US Mint restarted production of Large Cents with a new design created by Robert Scot to replace the often criticized Classic Head design. This design is referred to as the Coronet Large Cent, which has two main subtypes: the Matron Head (1816-39) and Braided Hair (1839-57) varieties. Christian Gobrecht began making modifications to the design starting in 1836. All of these large cents were produced in Philadelphia. Both series feature many different die varieties and errors, making it a particularly challenging set to complete! This particular example is of the Braided Hair variety and was minted in 1851.

Ask about how you can save more by bundling items!

Lot #521

Rosemont Coins
